Allotment Life: April 2020

April has been super productive on Plot 31 as I’ve been off work and the weather has been glorious! No April showers here – we’ve had hardly any rain at all. With the help and muscles of David I have ticked off some very big jobs at the allotment, and I’ve done lots of smaller projects too.

This month we have;
·       Taken up and re-laid paving slabs by the shed door
·       Fixed the bottom of the shed where the panel had rotted away
·       Made five new raised beds to combat the worst flood prone area on the plot
·       Cleared vegetation off the patio area so I can actually sit there
·       Dug a pond!
·       Sowed a load of flower seed amongst the bulbs to get a good display of mixed flowers over summer
·       Dug over and weeded three beds ready for summer squash plants
·       Started digging over and weeding the main quince bed, ready for major overhaul
·       Watched the solitary bees emerge
·       Planted potatoes
·       Weeded and started to sort out the herb bed. This needs a major overhaul too
·       Sowed salad crops including radish, parsnip, peas, lettuce, lambs lettuce, spinach, carrot, chard, sorrel and beetroot
·       Momma P has been and strimmed and mowed the grass a couple of times too

Written down it doesn’t actually look like a lot, but it feels like I’ve done loads! Every trip up the plot ends with a mass watering session, and we’ve put fresh food out for the birds and fox maybe five times too.

The pond is nearly done but I am awaiting oxygenating pond plants and some aquatic compost for my new water lily. David and I are also going to build a fence around the pond as the ground slopes, so one side is about 2ft deep and the other only a few inches.
