Allotment Life: July 2021

Not a lot to report, I think? I haven’t spent much time at the allotment during July. Work, annual leave, house hunting, stress stress stress. Also the allotment this year is very low maintenance / I have been too knackered to do any more than the basic level required. Still very much finding my feet with the new plot and looking, watching and waiting to see which weeds I need to banish. Mostly mares tail, dock, bindweed, thistle, couch grass, bramble, and creeping buttercup. The usual combination.

July was very much a month of peas and carrots from both plots, with a few potatoes from mine.

Things are growing well and I harvested the garlic ahead of time in June (I usually wait until the end of July – maybe I should have done).

Overall the plot is looking lush and green but that’s due to the weeds. My waterbutts have been filled and emptied and are hopefully now on their way to being filled up again.

Lots of butterflies have made appearances after the June gap which happened quite late this year. I have seen peacock, small tortoiseshell, gatekeeper, small copper, speckled wood, cabbage white, small skipper, and a common blue.
